Kjære kolleger,
Det foreligger nyheter om den 35. IASS-konferansen i München sommeren 2025:
1) Konferansens nettside har vært online i noen dager nå: www.lmu.de/iass2025. Den vil bli utvidet fortløpende i løpet av de neste månedene. Der vil man finne all informasjon om konferansen, som program, plenumsforedrag, anbefalinger til hoteller og restauranter for lunsjpausen, mulige utflukter og mye mer.
2) Vi minner om at fristen for å sende inn forslag til konferanseinnlegg er 1. desember. Send forslagene med tittel og sammendrag (abstract) til iass2025@lrz.uni-muenchen.de.
3) Temaet for konferansen har så langt vært »Peripetier, katastrofer, happy endings: Vendepunkter i nordisk litteratur«. Vi ønsker å utvide det til »Vendepunkter i nordisk litteratur og kultur«, slik at det fremgår av tittelen at vi også ønsker innlegg fra film, tegneserier og sakprosa, men også fra kulturstudier og andre relevante fagområder. Vi har allerede gitt mange eksempler fra disse feltene i vores call for papers. Fellesnevneren for konferansen er overbevisningen om at vendepunkter er narrativt konstruerte, og også viljen til å revurdere begrepene »Peripetier, katastrofer, happy endings«.

Peripeteias, catastrophies, happy endings: Turning points in Nordic literature and culture
Dear colleagues,
We have some news about the 35th IASS Conference in Munich in summer 2025:
1) The homepage www.lmu.de/iass2025/en is now online and we will be adding information to it over the course of the next few months. All information about the conference will be accessible on this homepage, including the conference programme, keynotes, hotel recommendations, sightseeing tips, and more.
2) We would like to remind you that the deadline for paper and panel proposals is 1 December. Please send proposals (title and abstract) to iass2025@lrz.uni-muenchen.de.
3) The conference theme was advertised as »Peripeteias, catastrophies, happy endings: Turning points in Nordic literature«. We have decided to broaden this title to »Turning points in Nordic literature and culture« to make clear that we welcome papers and proposals from cultural studies, area studies, film studies, and history/art history. We supplied some examples of these in the call for papers – we are convinced that turning points are narrative constructions that can be applied productively in many different contexts, and that this will give us the opportunity to rethink what we mean by »peripeteias, catastrophies and happy endings«.

The Seventh Workshop of the Ecocritical Network for Scandinavian Studies (ENSCAN) is an online, transatlantic workshop and will take place from April 3 to 5, 2025. It is convened by Juliane Egerer (University of Augsburg, Germany), Hanna Mattila (Sámi allaskuvla/Sámi University of Applied Sciences, Kautokeino, Norway), and Tim Frandy (University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada).
Theoretical framework
Postcolonial Ecocriticism and Indigenous Environmental Justice (IEJ) are two closely related fields: The first explores complex intersections of ecological problems and social power structures connected to ethnicity, Indigeneity, gender, national borders, and land entitlement, also focusing on, among others, hegemonic centrisms, ecological imperialism, speciesism, and environmental racism. The latter transcends Eurowestern definitions of Environmental Justice by insisting that Indigenous traditional knowledges, worldviews, epistemologies, ontologies, axiologies, and the agency of non-human beings, such as plants, animals, elements, minerals, spirit beings, and the land, are relevant for creating a future that includes living well with Earth.
Goals
Indigenous literatures and creative arts maintain numerous complex functions for Indigenous artists, as well as both outsider and insider audiences: raising awareness of ecological, social, and political issues; spawning the decolonizing changes of artivism in society; elevating certain cultural aesthetics and discourses; recontextualizing aspects of traditional culture to achieve ecological, social, and political goals; creating art products through which human and non-human community is formed and sustained; and so much more.
The workshop will focus on Indigenous literatures, creative arts, and expressive culture from Northern Europe (Sápmi) and North America (Turtle Island), especially the Indigenous peoples of the North. The emphasis is placed on Postcolonial Ecocriticism and Indigenous Environmental Justice, and on sociocultural, environmental, and political processes as modes of analyzing, interpreting, and reading. The workshop wishes to highlight the role of Indigenous literatures, creative arts, and expressive culture in processes of decolonization, and in nurturing balanced, respectful, reciprocal, and inclusive relationships between humans, various kinds of non-human beings, the land, and the environment.
In the workshop, we will explore the following questions, among others:
Call for proposals
The workshop invites presentations that combine approaches of Postcolonial Ecocriticism and Indigenous Environmental Justice within the fields of Indigenous and Postcolonial Literary and Cultural Studies with a focus on the European and/or American North. Researchers from all career stages are encouraged to submit a paper proposal of up to 300 words and a brief bio of 100 words for a 20-minute paper to enscan.iej.project@gmail.com by November 30, 2024. The language of the workshop will be English. Scholars presenting papers at the workshop will have the opportunity to revise their papers into chapters for a peer-reviewed edited volume.

Över 35 000 studenter studerar svenska språket i utlandet, och många av dem blir Sverigeambassadörer inom kultur, näringsliv och internationella relationer. Nu hotar nedskärningar hela infrastrukturen för Sveriges stöd till svenskämnet vid utländska universitet.
[…] Vi uppmanar Svenska institutet att stoppa nedskärningarna inom området Svenska språket i världen, och ansvariga politiker att agera för att långsiktigt säkra stödet till svenskundervisningen vid utländska universitet.
